Otis opens Global Lead Design Center in Shanghai

SHANGHAI, June 5, 2018 — Otis has inaugurated its largest research and development center in its global network in Shanghai. The new Lead Design Center will accelerate development of new equipment and service solutions for elevator and escalator customers worldwide and also support innovation across all aspects of Otis operations.

Inaugurated by Otis President Judy Marks and Otis China President Perry Zheng, together with leaders of the related units, the new facility is one of three Otis Lead Design Centers around the world. Staffed by more than 500 engineers with expertise across a range of disciplines, the Otis Shanghai Lead Design Center is equipped with advanced facilities including state-of-the-art laboratories and offices designed for collaboration and innovation.

The Center joins Otis’ R&D expertise in China, bringing together the company’s engineering resources here to create synergies, accelerate product development and generate customer-driven innovation. The Center develops standards, high rise elevators, systems and components, as well as other new equipment and service offerings. In addition to traditional elevator disciplines, the Lead Design Center has a strong focus on strengthening Otis’ digital and connected offerings with Otis’ continued commitment to product quality and safety.

The Center also houses the Otis Global High-Rise Center of Excellence, which provides a full portfolio of high rise solutions for major projects worldwide. Otis China’s supply chain, product quality and logistics functions are also co-located with the engineering teams in the Center to facilitate work effectiveness and customer value creation.

“At Otis, we are proud of our heritage as a technology pioneer and fully committed to continuing leading innovation in our industry. As the world becomes more urban, more digital and connected, it’s important that we invest even more in R&D to advance our core business and position us for success in the future. The new Otis Lead Design Center in Shanghai is a reflection of our ambition and a symbol of our confidence in the Chinese business,” Perry Zheng said.

Otis invented the first safety elevator 165 years ago and has continued to bring innovations to market ever since. Smart elevator products introduced in recent years include the CompassPlus dispatching system, OptiSensevideo analytics, the eCall passenger app, and smartphone-based connected elevator solutions that remotely diagnose problems and dispatch maintenance engineers accordingly.

Otis also continues to enhance its revolutionary Otis SkyBuild self-climbing elevator technology to improve construction efficiency and its breakthrough Otis Gen2® elevator, which uses flat belts in place of conventional elevator ropes to improve reliability, energy efficiency, and design flexibility. In addition, Otis launched its Otis ONE IoT service platform recently.

Otis technology has been serving such iconic buildings as Burj Khalifa in Dubai, currently the world’s tallest building, as well as Shenzhen Ping’ An Finance Center, Tianjin Chow Tai Fook Center and Shanghai World Finance Center, alongside major infrastructure works such as Pudong International Airport and metro networks nationwide.
