Otis High-Rise Elevators Selected for Guiyang’s New CBD Landmark

GUIYANG, China, June 29, 2015 – Otis Elevator (China) Co. Ltd (“OECC”) will install 220 elevators and escalators in Guiyang Huaguoyuan, a 347-meter twin-tower complex located in downtown Guiyang city that will become the tallest building OECC serves in western China. Otis is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp., a leading provider to the aerospace and building systems industries worldwide. (NYSE: UTX)

Urbanization is progressing rapidly in Guiyang and throughout western China. To accelerate the city’s ongoing transformation, the government of Guiyang released a five-year plan in 2014 to improve the urban environment. Guiyang Huaguoyuan, one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in the city, will become a new landmark in the central business district when completed.

Guiyang Huaguoyuan is a multi-use urban complex composed of a five-star hotel and high-end retail, office and residential space. OECC will supply several elevator and escalator models, including Otis Gen2® energy-efficient elevators, commercial escalators and high-rise elevators with speeds up to 7 meters per second.

“Since entering western China over 20 years ago, Otis China has witnessed the astonishing development of the region’s cities, with the skyline growing higher and higher,” said Tony Black, president, Otis Elevator (China) Investment Co. Ltd. “We are honored that Otis China has played a role in this ongoing transformation. We continue to market the business in western China in order to bring the best of our technology to the region and to continue providing high-quality products and professional service that the construction sector and the riding public deserve. We are pleased to support the Guiyang Huaguoyuan project developed by Guizhou Homnicen Group.”

In addition to Otis elevators, GST will supply fire and gas detection as well as alarm systems for the project. GST, a leader of China’s fire and security industry and trusted provider of comprehensive fire solutions around the world, is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems.

The high-rise elevators for Guiyang Huaguoyuan feature Otis’ leading technologies. Compared with ordinary elevators, high-rise elevators operate at higher speed and loads, which demand more stringent requirements for materials and higher standards for safety systems performance. For example, for high-rise products with speeds above 7 meters per second, Otis uses materials with higher temperature resistance, such as titanium alloy, to make safety brakes that will protect the elevator rail from damage due to heat generated during operation. This helps ensure the reliability and safety of the elevator system.

As the inventor of the world’s first safety elevator, Otis remains the choice of many high-rise buildings around the world. Over the past century, Otis has provided elevators to eight of the ten world’s tallest buildings.
