At United Technologies, we are well positioned to play a key role in delivering innovation. While all of our teams offer the finest in thought leadership, one team – Pratt and Whitney’s Engine Center Delivery Transformation Team – has been awarded this year’s EH&S Innovation Award for developing the most creative and effective environment or health and safety program, process or system used to solve an unusually difficult challenge.

The Engine Center Delivery Transformation Team was tasked with working with multiple stakeholders on the engine packaging process to significantly reduce ergonomic challenges, material waste, process failure modes and cost per engine. The team met these challenges head on, developing highly innovative solutions for kitting, protecting and packaging aircraft engines, and implementing those solutions utilizing a phased approach to project management – all while demonstrating a dedicated commitment to the environment and sustainable processes.

The Engine Center Delivery Transformation Team’s four-phase project completely restructured the way material is presented to the Engine Center Pack Line, resulting in a potential savings of $11 million through 2020, as well as 200-plus tons of landfill waste reduction.
