UTC Continues Legacy of Volunteerism at Special Olympics

Yale University and Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) hosted the Special Olympics Connecticut (SOCT) 2019 Summer Games Presented by United Technologies Corp. June 7-9. This year, Special Olympics celebrated its 51st anniversary – and UTC has proudly supported the competition for 42 of those years!

Over the course of weekend, more than 300 UTC volunteers from all business units – and their friends and family members – supported 2,000 athletes and their loved ones in attendance. A torch ceremony featuring competitors, local law enforcement, and WEE entertainers kicked off a weekend full of the games themselves; activities and cognitive exercises for athletes; health resources providing hearing and vision tests; and info sessions on reflexology and hygiene.

This year’s CT Summer Games welcomed Pratt & Whitney’s Hispanic Leadership Forum to the UTC Planning Committee and 60 student volunteers from East Hampton High School – a longtime supporter of UTC and the Games. Tizz Weber, senior director, Communications, Pratt & Whitney and Special Olympics board member, shared in her opening remarks that she was “…humbled and gratified to serve as a longtime volunteer and a member of the board of directors, but further still, to work for a company that is steadfast in its commitment to making a difference in the communities where its employees live and work.”
