From Sustainable Cities to Sustainable Skies

National Geographic’s Urban Expeditions program takes on aviation

In the next and newest installment of National Geographic’s digital storytelling program, sustainable aviation will take center stage. Unlike past installments, this chapter will take a global look at the aviation industry.

The first story, a “By the Numbers” graphic, will address 5 major themes: climate change and aviation; aviation’s footprint on climate change; the volume of people taking flight and industry growth projections; reducing aviation’s environmental impact through design and fuels; and improving efficiency at airports.

Why? UTC companies touch each of these important aviation topics. From reducing fuel burn with the Geared Turbofan™ engine, to eliminating miles of aircraft electrical wiring (and reducing weight), and installing energy efficient elevators and HVAC systems in terminals, UTC employees have a hand in greening aviation from the ground up.

Urban Expeditions is a multiyear project spotlighting the rise of cities and innovative, sustainable solutions for managing urban growth. The initiative was made possible by a grant from   United Technologies Corporation   to the National Geographic Society.
