HARTFORD, Conn., Jan. 13, 2009 – UTC shone brightest among the top 10 corporate givers identified by Hartford’s most influential charities, according to Hartford Magazine, which named UTC Greater Hartford’s Top Corporate Citizen for 2009.
“I’m proud to lead a company that has a tremendous history of supporting the community. UTC employees have always been generous with their donations to the United Way and many other charitable organizations,” said UTC President & CEO Louis R. Chênevert.
Since 1994, UTC and its employees have contributed nearly $100 million to the United Way’s local chapter, making UTC the largest donor to the annual fundraising campaign in the capital area. Approximately 1,000 UTC employees participate in the United Way’s annual Day of Caring in Greater Hartford.
“Volunteerism is a longstanding part of UTC’s culture. UTC employees at all levels unselfishly offer their time and talents to support many great nonprofit organizations in our community,” Chênevert added. “Supporting the community is not only the right thing to do – it also makes us a better company.”
Hartford Magazine, which pictured Chênevert on the cover of its January issue now on newsstands, said UTC’s financial contributions and volunteer efforts far outdistanced any other corporation in Greater Hartford.
The magazine also highlighted UTC’s support of community programs such as the Greater Hartford Arts Council, FIRST Robotics regional competition, Junior Achievement and Building Community Excellence program, among many others.
“Having a reputation for being a good corporate citizen helps us recruit the very best employees. Stronger education and cultural institution also make Hartford a better community for our employees to live, work and to raise their families,” said Chênevert.
Other charitable all-stars in Hartford Magazine’s top 10 are Aetna, CIGNA, The Hartford, ING, Lincoln Financial, Northeast Utilities, The Phoenix, Travelers and UnitedHealthcare.
