Environment at Local Children’s Center in Korea
SEOUL, South Korea, June 20, 2016 – Otis Elevator Korea Co. Ltd. (Otis Korea) launched its “Green Shoots” campaign designed to provide elevator safety education and improve the environment at a local children’s center in Anyang, South Korea. Otis, the world’s leading manufacturer and maintainer of people-moving products, including elevators, escalators and moving walkways, is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
Otis Korea volunteers replaced the wallpaper, flooring, desks and chairs, and delivered books donated by the employees to the center. They spent the day with children, teaching them about elevator and escalator safety, and promoting environmental sustainability with a project to draw environment-related pictures on reusable bags to raise awareness about safety and the environment.
Taking an active part in the event, Ik-seo Cho, managing director of Otis Korea, remarked how happy he was to provide “elevator safety education” and to help provide a clean and safe venue for the children. “Otis Korea will continue our activities to contribute to making our communities safer,” Cho said.
Lee Ok-seon, who leads the Geumbit Local Children Center, expressed her gratitude to Otis Korea. “Due to financial restraints, we couldn’t improve the facilities that were outdated and inadequate,” she said. “We were worried about the children’s safety and health. But with the help of Otis Korea, our facilities are improved, and children have benefited from the valuable safety and environment education session. It proved to be very helpful.”
Since 2002, Otis Korea has offered the elevator safety education program to some 15,000 children to promote a more educated public. Employees also meet regularly outside of work to volunteer in the community. Otis Korea is also planning an activity for employees and their families to paint a “safety mural.”
Developed to raise environmental and safety awareness among children, the UTC Green Shoots campaign includes building or replacing educational facilities, contributing to local libraries and offering educational programs for children. Launched in 2011, the campaign has drawn some 4,000 UTC employees around the world who voluntarily get involved to deliver benefits to more than 150 primary schools in Asian countries, including China, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and South Korea.
