Four generations elevating Chicago to new heights

The Otis family that keeps Chicago's tallest buildings running

Vanderplow edited

Otis elevator mechanics are the unsung heroes of the Chicago skyline – working hard to keep people moving in some of the city’s tallest buildings. And the Vanderplow family has been doing exactly that for four generations. The Vanderplow men have serviced some of the most iconic buildings in Chicago, such as the Willis Tower and the John Hancock Center.

Brothers Loren and Jon Vanderplow, fourth generation mechanics, are very conscious of the important role Otis has played in their family history. From the Sky Ride tower at the World’s Fair during the Depression, to construction during Chicago’s big building boom, to modernization efforts throughout the city, the Vanderplow family has been giving the city of Chicago a lift for more than 163 years.
