UTC Climate, Controls & Security’s Pittsfield, Maine facility has been awarded this year’s Clean and Quiet Award, given to the nominated United Technologies business unit, regional or individual location that demonstrates the greatest development and progress toward preventing employee exposure to noise and chemical exposure health hazards.

In 2011, the Pittsfield EH&S Management Oversight Committee put into action an ambitious plan to eliminate the need for a hearing conservation program in accordance with the UTC Quiet initiative. The plan involved utilizing 19 engineering solutions that reduce employee noise exposure below acceptable hearing conservation level. The implementation of these engineering changes resulted in the reduction of average noise by 40 decibels over two years.

Pittsfield’s work showcases the practical use of environmental, health and safety improvements. The facility manufactures a variety of electronic equipment in the life safety industry, so healthy hearing is vital – not just for our employees, but the safety of our customers.
