On Friday, Dec. 2, nearly 100 UTC employee volunteers spent the day purchasing, delivering, and sorting 2,176 toys in support of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots Foundation’s annual giving campaign. For 36 years, UTC has maintained its commitment to the Toys for Tots Program, contributing more than half a million toys to children and families in need during the holiday season.
Volunteers split their shopping efforts between Manchester and Newington, Conn. Toys “R” Us locations, choosing toys, games, and books for infants and children aged one to 15. After filling two trucks, the toys were delivered to the Navy and Marine Reserve Center in Plainville, Conn., and sorted into age groups before being bundled for distribution throughout Fairfield, Tolland, Windham, Middlesex, Hartford, and Litchfield Counties.
U.S. Marine Corps Reservists Major Richard Zjawin and Sergeant Timothy Dallas oversaw the day’s activities and were thrilled with the outcome. “This morning, this warehouse was empty; look at it now!” said Sergeant Dallas. “I just wish I could be there to see the children’s reactions when they open their gifts.” Major Zjawin shared that his favorite part of the program is witnessing the entire process from start to finish. “You see toys being chosen and purchased in the morning, and on their way out the door by the end of the day. It’s tremendously gratifying,” he said. “Because of UTC’s support, Toys for Tots was able to distribute toys to 10 CT-based non-profits.”
