Does a master’s degree really help you every day?

Simon Huang has a simple response. Yes.

Through the Employee Scholar Program, the 24-year-old environmental engineer with UTC Aerospace Systems is earning his master’s degree in environmental engineering from Johns Hopkins University. “My studies have enabled me to develop programs that incorporate creative ways for sustainability,” he says. “And that has really contributed to my job.”

Simon has applied his education in a very visible way. A communications system that he developed includes computer kiosks throughout his facility that allows employees easy access to environmental, health and safety information. His contributions have helped the UTC Aerospace Systems California site earn the Green Business Award from the City of Riverside. He also commits significant personal time as a volunteer with Engineers Without Borders.

“I like to think big,” says Simon. “And that’s what the Employee Scholar Program prepares you to do. It gives you the mentality to approach your career or job with the tools you need to solve problems and improve business.”
