Marc Brennan joined Otis as a call dispatcher, moving through various positions within the service team. When an opportunity arose in the Information and Systems department, he knew that was the path he wanted to follow.
As Marc explains, “I’ve always had a passion for computing. This was really cemented with the rollout of a new application within our customer service team. As I became aware of and comfortable with the system, more and more people would approach me for assistance. I had a growing family, and I wanted to develop my career long term. The Employee Scholar Program is enabling that. I work full time while pursuing a degree in computing and information technology.”
Marc expects to complete his bachelor’s degree in 2018 but already is applying coursework to his job. His classes in coding have enabled him to write short pieces of code for certain projects, and the networking module has helped him troubleshoot network issues and engage with third-party support teams.
“Networking is the most interesting module I’ve taken,” says Marc. “It amazes me how everything works and links together. It has given me greater insight into how Otis’ network infrastructure operates. I was recently given a firewall project, and what I learned in class helped enormously.”
As many Employee Scholars will attest, earning a degree boosts confidence and opens up a world of possibilities. For Marc, it has had an additional benefit. “I am so delighted that I’ve been able to inspire my wife to return to her education and pursue her career aspirations.”
