Environment, health and safety
At UTC, we manage environment, health and safety (EH&S) in a systematic and deliberate manner, governed by documents that define our performance at every step - from establishment of expectations, to audits, to reports to our management.
We have multiple levels of documents governing the EH&S function within UTC:
- 2007-2010 EH&S goals
- The UTC EH&S policy, created in 1991 and revised in 2005, defining general conditions that all UTC businesses and employees are expected to comply with, as well as defining and describing our goals of safe products and services, zero employee injuries, and an unmatched record in protecting the natural environment.
- An EH&S management system document, created in 1991 and revised in 2006, that includes 12 elements supporting UTC's EH&S continuous improvement process.
- UTC EH&S standard practices, which define minimum operating requirements for all UTC locations globally.
- Serious injuries, fatalities, and serious environmental incident policies including the reporting, investigation, and incident review requirements.
- EH&S goals and metrics in support of the policies.
We implemented an EH&S audit program in the early 1990s to review compliance with the EH&S management system. In 2003 the program was modified to measure the degree of implementation of the EH&S management system and the effectiveness of the system.
Reports to management on EH&S include periodic performance reviews with senior management and the board of directors. Also, senior management reviews all serious injuries, fatalities and serious environmental incidents.
UTC is committed to improving its EH&S performance. Our reductions in employee injuries, emissions and resource consumption to date demonstrate our dedication.
