Q: What are the goals of UTC's Community Affairs Department?
A: Our grant and volunteer programs are intended to:

  • Support UTC's historical commitment to Greater Hartford, Conn.
  • Build relationships with targeted stakeholders and thought leaders through active engagement in the corporate responsibility movement.
  • Promote and foster community involvement with future and current employees.
Q: What type of grants and volunteer requests does UTC support?
A: UTC funds only qualified 501(c)3 organizations that meet the company's eligibility criteria and operate in its focus areas. In Greater Hartford, UTC supports grants in the following areas:
  • Arts and culture, primarily through UTC's annual Greater Hartford Arts Council workplace giving campaign
  • Math and science education
  • Environment
  • Human Services, primarily through UTC's annual United Way workplace giving campaign
Throughout the United States, the company supports grants to national arts organizations and groups engaged in environmental sustainability work.

Q: How does UTC accept grant applications?
A: UTC accepts grants online only. Paper or e-mail submissions are not considered.

Q: Can an organization apply for funds multiple times throughout the year?
A: No. UTC will accept only one grant submission a year from qualified nonprofit organizations.

Q: Is there a deadline to apply for a grant?
A: No. UTC's Corporate Headquarters accepts online grant applications throughout the year.

Q: When will applicants be notified after submitting online proposals?
A: Applicants can expect to receive notification within one calendar quarter of application submission. E-mail is the preferred communication between applicants and the UTC staff.

Q: Is there a geographic restriction for UTC grant-making and volunteer support?
A: Yes. UTC's grant making is focused on Greater Hartford in the areas noted above. Nationally, UTC's grant making is centered on the northeast corridor of the United States, namely the urban areas of Washington, D.C., New York City and Boston.

Q: Are there certain requests or organizations that UTC does not fund?
A: UTC's grant program does not fund individuals, religious activities, municipalities, dues or gifts to alumni groups that are not distributed to the eligible higher education institution, fees for publications or merchandise, booster clubs, sororities or fraternities, political groups, organizations engaged in or advocating illegal action, and any organization determined by UTC to have a conflict of interest. Due to the volume of requests, UTC generally does not fund local PTAs, school booster clubs, charitable walks or races.
