Few high school students know what career they want to pursue later in life. Liana Layug was an exception.

My grandfather was in the Navy and swayed me towards the military and more specifically the Navy. When 9/11 happened it was a sure thing; it was set in stone from that day forward,” said Layug.

Layug always had a fascination with aviation and the opportunity to serve as an aviation electrician was a perfect fit. Her duties included maintaining and repairing the electrical systems of military aircraft, a responsibility that gave her a chance to travel to Spain, Italy and Greece. During her time in the Navy, Layug enrolled at Saint Leo University where she earned a bachelor’s in human resources management.

A New England native, Layug moved to Connecticut in 2015 and began working at Pratt & Whitney as a Human Resources staffing specialist. In her current position as an executive assistant, Layug credits one particular skill that she learned in the Navy to the success of her career thus far.

“Veterans are able to be successful because of their ability to be so flexible. Whatever you throw at them or give them to do, they can handle it,” said Layug. “They are used to constant change and when United Technologies hires veterans, they are getting employees who possess that invaluable trait.”

She credits UTC-4-Vets, an employee resource group for veteran employees, for making a big difference in helping her transition to a new company over the past year.

“Being part of UTC-4-Vets reminds me of why I chose to join the military,” said Layug. “Having the opportunity to attend events or volunteer with other members of the group is a rewarding experience and something that has added to my time here at UTC.”
