Hui Miao joined Carrier’s Shanghai division in 2003 as an engineer. A year later he moved into a leadership position as head of the commercial  team. “I was faced with new tasks and responsibilities in a very fast-growing business,” says Hui. “It was immediately clear to me that I needed to develop my management capabilities to be as successful as possible.”

That’s when he enrolled in the MBA program at Fudan University. “My MBA not only broadened my knowledge of business,” says Hui, “it also helped my interpersonal skills.” He explains that he was a bit of an introvert, not particularly comfortable interacting with others. “Communications is a big part of my job now,” he says. “My studies gave me confidence and taught me how to express myself and be a better team leader,” he says.

Many of the courses Hui took related directly to his job, especially data model decision-making, supply chain management and operations management. “By using mathematical tools I learned in these classes, I successfully designed a compressor sales trend model used for sales forecasting.” In 2009, his team earned the only two awards for 2009 HVAC China Best Supervisor.

Like many ESP alumni, Hui sees the program as inspirational. “The ESP can literally change your destiny,” he says. “It takes away the worry of money so that you can focus on your studies and realize your ambitions.”

He also is a strong proponent of encouraging colleagues to enroll in the ESP and has been gratified to see many of his colleagues follow his lead. “Thank you, UTC. And congratulations on the 20th anniversary of the ESP!”
