“I started at Carrier as a welder,” says George Deese. “I pursued a degree because I wanted a more rewarding career, and I wanted to position myself for advancement.”

The Employee Scholar Program was the ticket he needed. He earned a degree in operations management, a field that has paid off with major successes in his professional career.

“The supply chain touches every aspect of a business. I knew it was a good field to get into,” says George. “Today I’m leading a project that reduced the material footprint in one of our manufacturing cells.”

George maintains that the ESP not only provided him the tangible skills to advance his career, but it also enabled him to look at work in new, innovative ways. He mentors coworkers, encouraging them to take advantage of the ESP as he did.

“The concepts of push versus pull manufacturing have helped me in developing new material kit strategies here in the Charlotte factory,” says George. “I get to work with a lot of cross-functional teams. My leadership skills are really starting to develop.”

When it comes to the ESP, George expresses a sentiment shared by most who have gone through the program. “I’m grateful to the company for investing in my future. I hope I can give UTC a good return.”
