United Technologies immediately recognized the potential of Angela Li when she joined the company more than 20 years ago. Early in her career, she was encouraged to take part in a number of short-term education programs, on-the-job training and mentoring – all development programs that enabled her to steadily climb the ranks.

“These classes helped me tremendously,” she says. “They enabled me to grow professionally and take on more and more responsibilities. But as my responsibilities grew, I knew I needed greater learning to be effective.” That is when her supervisor introduced her to the Employee Scholar Program and encouraged her to enroll.

“He told me that UTC saw great potential in me and wanted to help me grow,” says Angela. “He said a more systematic and broader education could help me if I wanted to continue to advance – and that an MBA would take me there.”

She took his advice and in 2006 received her MBA from Rutgers University. She went on to become business development manager for a former UTC business unit and then to her current position as general manager of EMSI China, an international leader in green building and sustainable community design.

“The ESP was a valuable experience for me,” says Angela, “but it’s also valuable to UTC. It encourages employees to keep learning, to broaden their horizons and to be better and more competent in their roles.”
