Hundreds of employees from across the company volunteered at the UTC-sponsored Special Olympics Connecticut Summer Games at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven June 6-7. These employees were among the 600 volunteers who assisted with a variety of events including track, shot put, mini javelin, softball throw, pentathlon and field awards to make the Summer Games a success for the 38th straight year.

"UTC runs the largest event that we have the track and field events and they know all the ins and outs," said Laurie-Jean Hannon, Vice President, Sports & Competition, Special Olympics. "Truly, track wouldn’t happen without UTC’s support of volunteers."

Over the weekend, more than 2,000 athletes and partners competed in the annual event. Longtime volunteer Dave Erasmus, Pratt & Whitney Sales Manager, has returned every year since he first started assisting with Special Olympics in the early 1980s. When asked what motivates him, he said, "This is a very special group of people who dedicate their time and hard work to drive awareness for these outstanding individuals. I am incredibly proud to be part of this organization."

Through her participation in Special Olympics, Nancy Hemingway, Pratt & Whitney Financial Analyst, has learned lifelong skills on valuing individuals with disabilities.

"I have learned to grow with the athletes, respect them and be an advocate wherever I can to ensure every person with disabilities is treated equal and is shown the love and respect they deserve," Hemingway said.

In addition to what she's learned as a volunteer, Hemingway appreciates the international scope of Special Olympics.

"I remember what it was like years ago in my country, Argentina, for persons with disabilities," Hemingway said. "It is through the efforts of Special Olympics that I had the joy to see a whole team of athletes from my country come to the 1995 World Games. Special Olympics has done so much for so many, and for that I will always volunteer to help where I can."

This year’s Special Olympics World Games will take place in Los Angeles and several UTC employees are planning to volunteer at the games.
